In April 2021, Abbey Upholsterers suffered a significant fire event that exposed vulnerabilities in its production environment. Under the leadership of Operations Director Jonathan Mallett, Abbey initiated a strategic shift toward proactive industrial fire protection. GreCon, led by Technical Sales Manager Oscar Little, was selected to deliver a comprehensive spark-detection and extinguishing system.

Protecting long-term investments

Abbey operates high-quality woodworking and finishing processes with continuous dust extraction and high-energy machinery. After the 2021 incident, Abbey required a fully automated, insurer-approved solution to detect and extinguish ignition sources within milliseconds.

GreCon deployed a tailored spark detection and extinguishing system across two critical areas: the Main Factory (post-2021 fire), high-speed spark detectors, and automated water extinguishing integrated into the extraction ducts. The system was expanded in 2024 to protect the new Paint Room with sensors optimised for fine-particulate environments with dedicated extinguishing points. 

The system provides: 

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • automatic machinery shutdown
  • and seamless operational continuity.
