What is the GreCon CHIPINSPECTOR?

Conventional cleaning and sorting systems reach their limits when it comes to rubber, glass and small metal parts. The result: quality problems, rejects and machine wear. CHIPINSPECTOR detects even hard-to-detect foreign objects – regardless of moisture or surface structure – and selectively removes them. For smooth processes and satisfied end customers.

 

It is an inline system for foreign object detection based on dual-energy X-ray technology – familiar from baggage screening. Unlike conventional systems, CHIPINSPECTOR detects even hard-to-detect materials such as rubber, glass, stones or soil – regardless of moisture, colour or surface texture.

 

At the heart of the system are two X-ray sources with different energies that penetrate the wood chip stream. Each type of material absorbs this radiation in a characteristic way, creating a differentiated image of the material stream. A downstream high-performance algorithm evaluates these signals in real time and classifies the material that has passed through.

The CHIPINSPECTOR detects:

  • Rubber (from 1 cm³)
  • Glass (from 3 mm)
  • Metal parts (from 10 mm²)
  • Stones, earth, sand and soil residues

Its high resolution and material-selective evaluation make the CHIPINSPECTOR ideal for mixed contaminants, such as those frequently found in recycled wood or unsorted input material.

The technology is immune to external influences such as:

  • Residual moisture in the material
  • Colour variations
  • Dust or fibre density

Ejection: fast, precise, gentle on materials

As soon as a foreign object is detected, the CHIPINSPECTOR triggers a targeted ejection via a 100 mm wide sorting flap – exactly at the position where the object is located. The flap mechanism is designed for 24/7 operation and works with minimal material loss.

The CHIPINSPECTOR is typically installed downstream of the wood chip processing unit and upstream of the refiner/knife ring chipper or storage facility. Its modular design allows for easy integration into existing lines. Thanks to its robust construction (IP65), it can also be used in dusty environments without any problems.
