Precise thickness control for your series production using laser or probe technology

GreCon THICKNESSCONTROL

Whether pressing, calibrating, grinding or quality checking: knowing the thickness means controlling the quality. GreCon THICKNESSCONTROL detects deviations inline – reliably, precisely and early on. For maximum series quality with minimum waste.

  • More stable processes with changing recipes
  • Integration into press, sanding or sawing zone
THICKNESSCONTROL LT thickness measuring system with two measuring heads and non-contact measurement using laser beams.
The THICKNESSCONTROL LT thickness measuring system determines the thickness of solid, soft and moist materials using non-contact measurement with laser beams.

Multiple variants – one goal: precise inline thickness measurement

The thickness of materials in the production line is more than just a measurement – it is a key quality criterion. Even the smallest deviations affect load-bearing capacity, bending strength and compliance with standards. Manual sampling is incomplete and too late. THICKNESSCONTROL measures during the ongoing process and displays deviations immediately – before rejects occur. This saves material, energy and complaint costs.

Whether sensitive surfaces, maximum repeat accuracy or compact lines – with THICKNESSCONTROL, you can choose the right technology for your application.

System variants for every production reality

  • RT: Robust roller systems for use after sanding or sawing units. Ideal for classic wood-based panels.
  • LT / LC: Contactless laser crossbars for continuous thickness measurement. Suitable for continuous materials, web goods and panels.
  • SC: Special design for maximum precision with very thin materials (e.g. films, rubber, nonwovens).

Typical installation locations: After cooling, behind the saw, before/after the sanding line, during final inspection.

How THICKNESSCONTROL works

GreCon offers two measuring principles: tactile (RT) and contactless (LT/LC/SC). In sensing systems, pairs of rollers mechanically detect the material thickness. In non-contact variants, laser beams simultaneously scan the top and bottom sides. All systems are designed for high cycle rates and continuous industrial use.

Calibration, wear indication and temperature compensation are integrated. The systems are low-maintenance and continuously collect data for automatic press control or quality certification.

If your surface must not be touched or you want to measure the entire production width right up to the edges, THICKNESSCONTROL LT delivers precise measurement data without downtime. The laser system triangulates the thickness of solid, soft or moist materials – stationary or traversing.

Why THICKNESSCONTROL LT?

  • Early detection of quality fluctuations
  • Minimise grinding allowance, reduce material costs
  • Full coverage right up to the edges

Measuring method

THICKNESSCONTROL LT uses laser triangulation. A laser beam hits the plate surface – an offset camera detects the reflected light and calculates the distance. A small laser dot is created on the material as a reference.

Difference measurement – two laser sensor heads measure the top and bottom simultaneously and calculate the values; vibrations or bends are compensated.

Measurement against precision roller – a laser sensor measures from above against a fixed roller; ideal for very thin, smoothly guided materials.

Both variants deliver highly precise results without line stops and can be used stationary or traversing across the entire width.

Typical applications

Bitumen · Plasterboard · HR foam · Plastic sheets/films · PVC floor coverings · Rubber sheets · Wood-based materials industry

RT is used when maximum repeat accuracy is required for rough, thicker or curved sheets. Probes or a reference roller continuously measure the thickness – even at high belt speeds – and automatically calibrate themselves even at the smallest sheet distances.

Why THICKNESSCONTROL RT?

  • Further reduce grinding allowance
  • Quality control at high speed
  • Automatic calibration without line stoppage

Measuring method

RT works according to the difference principle. Two sensor heads scan the top and bottom simultaneously and the software calculates both signals. For very thin, smoothly guided materials, a single head measures against a precision roller. Both setups deliver micrometre-precise values without interruption.

Typical applications

Wood-based materials · Plywood · Carbon and glass fibre boards · Plasterboard · Insulation board · Plastic sheets/films · Solid wood · Mineral fibre boards · Leather · Metals · Non-woven fabrics

LC is the right choice when space is limited or only one measuring track is required. The compact laser system works according to the difference principle with a fixed reference surface and is particularly suitable for single-track applications with a narrow width or confined installation conditions.

Typical applications: Plastic sheets, film webs, narrow wood-based materials, special lines

SC was developed for high-end applications that require extreme repeatability. The system measures with an accuracy of ± 0.005 mm, making it ideal for thin films, nonwovens or high-tech plastics. Thanks to its compact design, SC is easy to integrate.

Typical applications: Nonwovens, high-performance films, thin coatings, special technical materials

Industry-specific advantages – for which manufacturer groups THICKNESSCONTROL is already in use

Wood-based materials industry: Reduces sanding allowance and waste for chipboard, MDF and OSB boards.

Plastics and film manufacturers: Detects thickness fluctuations in real time – even in the case of thermally induced warping.

Gypsum and fibre cement lines: Consistent board thickness despite varying moisture and temperature profiles.

Integration of THICKNESSCONTROL into a standard process

  • Joint analysis of line structure and materials
  • Selection of the appropriate system variant
  • Integration into production line (e.g. grinding line, saw outlet)
  • Commissioning and calibration
  • Visualisation and data connection to your control system

Before:

  • Manual sampling, delayed response
  • Excessive grinding allowances and material loss
  • Deviations only detected during QA

After:

  • Continuous inline data, seamless control
  • Less waste, more stable dimensional tolerances
  • Optimal yield and resource conservation
