Alfeld's traditional company Meyer Seals is a global player and world market leader of the packaging industry with its headquarters in Alfeld (Leine). Meyer Seals is the largest producer of seal inserts for plastics and aluminium caps in Europe. At three sites more than 18-20 billions of seal inserts are produced as punched or reel parts per year to seal food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, cosmetics and lubricants.

Numerous production steps are necessary for these products. An important success factor is the material thickness of the extruded polyethylene foam which is the basis of many seal inserts. Serious consequences would result from seal inserts that are too thick or too thin. 

Our solution for Meyer Seals

The company relies on high-precision measuring systems to ensure a high product quality. The material thickness of the extruded polyethylene foam is checked with a GreCon CCD thickness measuring system. The measurement takes place in line and without any contact. Thanks to high-precision shadow sensors, fluctuations in thickness can be detected at an early stage. A quickest possible process control can be implemented.

With this procedure it is possible to measure the material thickness of materials which are difficult to be measured as for example foam materials. For this purpose, the material is transported on a roller conveyor. The measuring sensor traverses over the entire production width.

The GreCon software which is especially adapted to Meyer Seals evaluates the measured values for the specific needs of Meyer Seals. The GreCon CCD measuring thickness system does not only provide information on the optimal range of the thickness but also makes a visualisation of long-term trends possible and offers numerous statistic functions to optimally control the production process.
