Belt Dryer in action

Industrial fire protection for belt dryers—detect fires early and extinguish them effectively

When hot air meets flammable material, every second counts.

Belt dryers are essential in many industrial production processes. But wherever flammable materials are dried with high temperatures and large volumes of air, there is a risk of fire. Sparks, embers, or over-dried material can trigger fires that spread within the plant and cause considerable damage.

With the GreCon PROTECTOR BELT DRYER, we detect critical fire events at an early stage and activate targeted extinguishing measures in the affected areas of the dryer. Intelligent detection and section-by-section extinguishing help minimize water usage while protecting unaffected areas of the plant. This helps reduce potential consequential damage and unplanned production downtime.

  • Monitor the plant during operation and when shut down

Risks and challenges

Belt dryers—an underestimated fire risk

In belt dryers, heated air is fed in to remove moisture from the material. In the process, high temperatures come into contact with products that are often flammable. The continuous movement of material and strong airflows can cause sparks and embers to spread within the plant.

Fires that start unnoticed inside the dryer are particularly dangerous. Without early detection, localized fires can spread to other areas and cause significant damage to conveyor belts and other plant components.

Spread of smoldering embers

Pockets of embers can be carried along the conveyor belts and by air currents within the dryer. As a result, a fire that was initially localized can spread to other areas of the dryer or to the material discharge point.

Over-drying and overheating

If material is overheated or over-dried, the risk of ignition increases. Technical defects or faults in the drying process can also cause critical temperature rises and lead to pockets of embers.

Entry of sparks and hot particles

Sparks or smoldering particles can be generated in upstream production processes and enter the belt dryer with the material feed. If they come into contact with combustible material there, they can trigger a fire.

GreCon PROTECTOR BELT DRYER: Industrial fire protection that intervenes where danger arises

An effective protection concept monitors the belt dryer in the areas where fire hazards can arise and spread. These include the material inlet and outlet, turning mechanisms, belt ends, and extraction and air duct areas.

GreCon PROTECTOR BELT DRYER combines intelligent detection, fast signal processing, and automatic fire suppression measures in a modular fire protection system.

The key principle: fire events are detected early and pinpointed to the affected areas of the dryer. Instead of flooding the entire dryer, individual extinguishing sections can be activated in a targeted way. This reduces water consumption and helps protect adjacent areas of the plant from unnecessary water exposure.

Detecting fire hazards early and reliably

The SCOUT detectors monitor critical areas of the belt dryer for sparks, hot particles, and flames.

These include, for example, the material inlet and outlet, turning mechanisms, belt ends, fans in extraction systems, and return and exhaust air areas. Daylight-insensitive spark detectors such as the GreCon SCOUT DLD 1/9 reliably detect ignition sources—even under changing light conditions.

Additional monitoring functions help ensure that fire hazards can be detected even while the plant is shut down.

Process signals. Control protective measures locally.

GreCon MISSION CONTROL consolidates the information from the connected detectors, monitors the fire protection system, and coordinates the specified protective measures.

The GreCon RANGER handles decentralized signal processing near the detection and suppression components. It processes signals on-site and triggers the necessary responses within milliseconds. This shortens signal paths and reduces the amount of cabling required.

Together, MISSION CONTROL and RANGER form an intelligent, distributed system architecture. Assigning detectors to extinguishing sections enables a targeted response to fire events in individual dryer areas.

Targeted extinguishing instead of flooding the entire dryer

HUNTER fire suppression components direct water precisely to where a fire has been detected. Instead of flooding a large area, the designated suppression sections are activated.

Special fine spray nozzles and extinguishing lances distribute the water within the affected areas. The extinguishing valves are located close to the process, eliminating the need for long dry pipes. As a result, the water reaches the extinguishing area quickly, and hardly any air is blown out that could further fan the flames.

This limits water usage while protecting unaffected areas of the dryer from unnecessary water exposure, helping reduce potential consequential damage to conveyor belts, plant components, and material.

Preventive dryer protection with the proven GreCon concept

The GreCon formula for success in machine fire protection can be easily illustrated using a general belt dryer flowchart. It shows how the individual plant configuration interacts with a custom protection concept based on high-precision GreCon technology.

Critical monitoring points include, for example, the feed and discharge sections, fans in extraction systems, the turning mechanism, and the end of the dryer belt. Here, daylight-insensitive sensors such as the GreCon DLD 1/9 reliably detect the initial stages of ignition. With this sensor concept, individually tailored to your plant, Fagus-GreCon can precisely locate the fire hazard within the dryer, helping avoid flooding the entire belt dryer.

The result: a significantly reduced risk of prolonged production stoppages thanks to minimal, sequential use of water and the resulting reduction in damage to conveyor belts, for example.

Even during downtime, the GreCon protection concept provides reliable plant monitoring—individually tailored to the plant’s requirements with spark or flame detectors. This means the plant can switch from production to downtime at any time.

If extinguishing is triggered, it is carried out with specially developed fine spray nozzles—a production-friendly and efficient method for practical, sequential extinguishing of individual dryer sections. The extinguishing system is designed to avoid long dry pipes. Instead, the extinguishing valves are located close to the process, supplying the extinguishing area with water quickly and precisely. This minimizes air being blown out in the drying duct area so the flames are not fanned unnecessarily.

Fire protection for belt dryers: Frequently asked questions

Yes. The modular architecture allows the system to be adapted to different plant configurations. Detectors, extinguishing zones, and control components are configured to suit the layout and requirements of the respective belt dryer.

Yes. Fire hazards can persist even after the plant has been shut down. The GreCon PROTECTOR BELT DRYER therefore enables monitoring tailored to shutdown conditions—using spark or flame detectors, depending on the plant’s requirements. This means the plant can switch from production to shutdown at any time.

Critical events can thus be detected outside regular production and appropriate protective measures triggered.

Large volumes of extinguishing water can cause further damage to conveyor belts, plant components, and the material being processed. Targeted extinguishing directs the required water to the affected area and limits the amount of water reaching other parts of the plant.

The belt dryer is divided into individual, monitored extinguishing areas. If the system detects a critical fire event, the affected extinguishing sections are activated. Special fine spray nozzles distribute the extinguishing water precisely within the respective area. This reduces water usage compared with flooding a large area.

The GreCon PROTECTOR BELT DRYER monitors critical areas of the plant with optical detectors that detect sparks, hot particles, or flames. The signals are processed and assigned to the relevant protection areas, so the designated fire suppression measures can be activated early and in a targeted way.

The material inlet and outlet, turning mechanisms, belt ends, and extraction systems and air ducts are particularly at risk. Accumulations of material or technical defects can also give rise to ignition sources inside the plant.

During the drying process, materials are exposed to heated air for an extended period. If these materials are flammable, high temperatures, sparks, or embers can cause ignition. Technical faults, over-drying, or the entry of hot particles further increase the risk.
