Protection for the brick production

Leipfinger-Bader - A decision for life

Bricks have been produced in the Bavarian Puttenhausen since 1861. Over time the requirements and the produces processes have decisively changed. Today, the brick production in Puttenhausen is a modern industrial company with a high degree of automation - bricks for residential construction are produced 7 days the week in two-shift operation. A key component of the production process is the firing of the green bricks.

Risks of fire and explosion

The increasing quality demands of the construction industry have to be fulfilled. The bricks are run through a tunnel kiln of 90m at a temperature of more than 900°C. To make available the energy necessary for this process, heavy oil was often used as fuel in the past. High storage costs, an expensive preheating of the oil to 80 °C, highly fluctuating prices and a lack of supply reliability caused many brick factories to change to gas as fuel. Besides, the transport and the firing with gas are environmentally friendlier and more sustainable than with oil. Another difference of the two energy sources is the deposits. In contrast to the heavy oil which tends to soot, gas is characterised by the generation of deposits during the combustion process.

To prevent pipe fires, the flue gas pipes of the brick production are monitored with GreCon spark detectors.

Our solution for Leipfinger Bader

Spark detection and extinguishment for the brick production

Since the beginning of 2019, flue gas ducts have been monitored with spark detectors of GreCon to avoid such a pipe fire. Optical fibres make a monitoring even with high process temperatures possible. If ignition sources are detected, the extinguishing system is activated and water is sprayed in a fine mist along the entire length of the duct. These individually adjustable thresholds make a protection concept possible that is exactly adapted to the system. All extinguishing processes can be controlled by panels with pushbuttons. High process temperatures in connection with deposits result in a dangerous combination. Leipfinger-Bader increased the safety in production once more by the installation of a fire protection system.

People at Leipfinger Bader are convinced of the solution. To achieve a reliable protection against fire for all plants, the next order for an installation of a pipe fire extinguishing systems for the Vatersdorf site has already been placed.

Customer statements

“If three sparks occur, the GreCon system triggers an alarm - in case of six sparks, the extinguishing is activated. We are able to guarantee an interruption-free production for our customers thanks to the pipe fire extinguishing system.”
