Industrial fire protection for the pellet industry

Monitoring of critical processing and transport processes for early detection of sparks and embers.

Monitoring of critical processing and transport processes for early detection of sparks and embers.

Pellet production is one of the most fire-prone areas of biomass processing. High temperatures, dry wood particles and heavy mechanical loads create ideal conditions for sparks, embers and dust explosions. Even the smallest ignition sources can spread in seconds – especially in dryers, presses, silos or pneumatic conveyor systems.

Reliable fire protection is therefore crucial to ensure production continuity and effectively protect personnel, equipment and stock.

In the past, we had to deal with fires. Today, we trust that the GreCon system eliminates this risk. Preventive detection and extinguishing is definitely the best solution.Energy Pellets Moerdijk BV

A worrying trend that underlines the importance of fire prevention – extinguish fires before they spread!

The most effective method of minimising fire and explosion risks is to use powerful spark detection and extinguishing systems in combination with tailor-made fire protection concepts for machines and critical areas – developed and implemented by Fagus-GreCon.

The solution: GreCon PROTECTOR PELLET, our protection concept for the pellet industry

Pellet production poses special challenges for fire protection: high temperatures, abrasive processes, combustible dust atmospheres and systems that run continuously. This is precisely why GreCon PROTECTOR PELLET was developed – our protection concept that monitors all critical areas of your production and reliably prevents fires.

GreCon PROTECTOR PELLET combines state-of-the-art spark and ember detection with automatic extinguishing that works during the ongoing process – without affecting production. Thanks to intelligently networked sensors, the system detects sparks, hot particles or embers in milliseconds and reacts immediately.

Your added value with our GreCon PROTECTOR PELLET

  • Process-safe early detection of sparks, embers and overheating
  • Automatic extinguishing – even during 24/7 operation
  • Protection of all relevant areas: shredding, drying, pellet press, filters, silos, conveyor lines
  • Modular architecture – ideal for new construction or retrofitting
  • Event history and visualisation for cause analysis and process optimisation
  • Minimal disruption, maximum plant availability

How GreCon PROTECTOR works

  1. Detect – sensors detect sparks, hot particles or embers
  2. Decide – the system evaluates the risk in real time
  3. Extinguish – automatically, precisely and without interrupting production
  4. Analyse – the event data helps to eliminate causes in a targeted manner

Consequences of a fire in the pellet industry

A fire in pellet production almost always leads to significant consequential damage:

  • Human danger due to high temperatures and smoke spread
  • Damage to dryers, presses, filters and conveyor systems
  • Production interruptions and high downtime costs
  • Destruction of entire batches of material or stock
  • Rising insurance premiums
  • Loss of customer orders and delivery reliability

Pellet plants usually operate continuously, which means that any malfunction immediately leads to delivery problems and production losses.

Hazards in pellet production

Wherever high temperatures, friction and dry biomass come together, an environment with a high risk of fire and explosion is created.

The production of pellets is highly mechanical and therefore full of potential ignition sources. Crushing, drying, pressing or pneumatic transport create conditions that promote sparks, embers and dust explosions:

  • Spark generation from shredders, hammer mills or hard foreign particles
  • Embers from friction and material compaction in the pellet press
  • Combustible dust clouds in filters, cyclones, coolers and silos
  • Overheated dryers, drives and conveyor lines
  • Hot particles carried along transport lines
  • Embers detected late in silos, intermediate containers or cooling zones

The result: a production environment in which fires can develop quickly and spread uncontrollably – with a significant impact on equipment, material flow and the availability of the entire line.

These risks are not a theoretical scenario. They are part of the daily operation of many pellet plants and regularly lead to damage, production downtime and high follow-up costs.

Reliable fire protection is therefore not an optional extra, but a central component of stable and safe pellet production.

And this is exactly where Fagus-GreCon comes in.
