How GreCon SPARKSTAR exceeds expectations

For FAMSUN, a Chinese OEM for feed production lines, it was important to find ways to detect ignition sources before they develop into an incident. These methods had to be integrated into the machine's design and be cost-effective for series production. GreCon fully met the requirements for OEM-ready series integration with the SPARKSTAR product family.

FAMSUN standardises fire protection with GreCon

Foreign objects such as stones or wire fragments in raw materials can generate sparks during animal feed production—creating a significant fire risk within the process. For FAMSUN, a Chinese OEM for feed production lines, it was clear that ignition sources must be detected before they develop into an incident—integrated into the machine design and cost-effective for series production.

Starting point and requirements

Fagus-GreCon initially assessed whether its next-generation PROTECTOR concept - built around the SparkStar Control CC7000 spark detection control panels and a scalable system architecture - would fit the FAMSUN use case. In an OEM environment, however, different priorities apply: 

  • a solution that is easy to integrate into serial machines
  • covers clearly defined protection zones
  • and remains economically scalable across rollouts.

Reliable protection for clearly defined tasks

SPARKSTAR was developed for smaller protection zones in spark suppression and machine fire protection. As a central alarm and control module, the product family connects detectors and suppression systems and responds reliably directly at the installation.

The control unit offers connections for up to four detectors and controls up to two extinguishing systems, which can be divided across two zones – for example, for the inlet and outlet of a machine. This allows fire protection to be implemented in a targeted and application-specific manner.

The GreCon SPARKSTAR product family is available in three versions:

  • SPARKSTAR CONTROL - designed for mounting on a DIN rail within an existing enclosure and features 23 RGB LEDs for direct status indication

  • SPARKSTAR CONTROL PRO - intended for wall mounting and is supplied with an enclosure

  • SPARKSTAR CONTROL MAX - also designed for wall mounting and additionally offers a touch display for operation and status indication directly on the device

Typical application in the line

In this case, the protected process step is the shredder used in feed production. Spark detectors are installed at the shredder exit and connected to SparkStar CONTROL MAX. The cabinet is mounted next to the machine and provides a real-time alarm signal as soon as sparks are detected.

SPARKSTAR is easy to configure: customers can complete the setup themselves using the installation instructions. The plug-and-play concept delivers the required functionality for this application and integrates smoothly into the surrounding system environment.

Solution and implementation

With the SPARKSTAR product family, GreCon fully met the requirements for OEM-ready series integration. Since then, FAMSUN has integrated the GreCon SPARKSTAR module into its machines.

When a display function became necessary during ongoing implementation, Fagus-GreCon responded pragmatically and added SparkX as the operator interface. 

Today, the SPARKSTAR product family - module and control console - is defined as the standard fire protection solution within FAMSUN’s product portfolio.

Operational benefits

The SPARKSTAR product family from GreCon met the requirements by:

  • detecting proactive rather than reactive: real-time monitoring detects sparks early, before risks escalate
  • being OEM-ready: plug-and-play—no on-site commissioning required
  • lowering service costs: no need to dispatch field engineers; at least one full day of service cost is saved per commissioning
