Fire protection for milling processes – detecting ignition sources before fires break out

Protect mills. Detect fires early. Avoid production downtime.

In industrial milling processes, high mechanical loads, foreign objects or overheated machine components create dangerous ignition sources. Sparks and embers can ignite the processed material or travel through conveying and extraction ducts into downstream plant. A fire can therefore quickly endanger far more than the mill itself.

With GreCon PROTECTOR MILL, we protect mills and connected production areas. Our intelligent fire protection system detects ignition sources at an early stage, extinguishes sparks automatically and enables targeted protective measures right up to direct mill extinguishing. This is how we limit fire risks and help protect your production from costly downtime.

  • Detect sparks and critical signs of fire at an early stage
  • Fight fires in the mill and in downstream plant areas in a targeted way
  • Reduce fire damage and unplanned production downtime

Risks and challenges

Why milling processes are particularly at risk of fire

In industrial mills, high mechanical forces act on the processed material. This can generate frictional heat, sparks and hot particles. When combustible materials are reduced in size, a single ignition source can be enough to start a fire under unfavourable conditions. Where dust concentrations are high, there is also a risk of explosion.

The connection to downstream production areas is particularly critical. Ignition sources from the mill can be carried onwards via material discharges, conveying lines and extraction systems, endangering filters or separators, for example.

Material blockages and overload

Blocked material discharges or excessive material feed increase the mechanical load. If the resulting heat cannot be dissipated sufficiently, the material being ground may overheat and ignite.

Mechanical defects and overheating

Damaged bearings, worn tools or defective machine components can lead to severe friction and high temperatures. At high rotational speeds in particular, this can create dangerous ignition sources.

Foreign objects in the material

Stones, nails or other metallic foreign objects can generate impact sparks when they come into contact with fast-running grinding tools. If these sparks meet combustible material or dust deposits, there is an acute risk of fire.

GreCon PROTECTOR MILL: fire protection that intervenes directly in the milling process

We protect the entire at-risk milling process – from the mill and the material discharge through to the connected conveying and extraction systems.

GreCon PROTECTOR MILL combines intelligent detection, fast signal processing and automatic protective measures in a modular fire protection system. Individual sparks can be extinguished in the material flow. If the system detects signs of a fire developing inside the mill, further measures can be triggered, right up to direct mill extinguishing.

The result is a coordinated protection concept that takes into account both the mill itself and downstream production areas.

Detecting ignition sources and signs of fire at an early stage

The SCOUT detectors monitor at-risk areas of the milling process. Spark detectors identify sparks and hot particles in the material discharge or in the mill exhaust air.

Conspicuously high or increasing spark activity may indicate a fire developing inside the mill. In addition, suitable temperature detectors allow critical machine areas, such as bearings, to be monitored.

Process signals. Control protective measures locally.

GreCon MISSION CONTROL consolidates the information from the connected detectors, monitors the fire protection system and coordinates the specified protective measures.

The GreCon RANGER handles decentralised signal processing close to the detection and extinguishing components. It processes signals on site and controls the necessary responses within milliseconds. This shortens signal paths and reduces the amount of cabling required.

Together, MISSION CONTROL and RANGER form an intelligent, distributed system architecture that can be flexibly adapted to different plant structures.

Extinguish ignition sources. Limit the spread of fire.

The HUNTER extinguishing components respond automatically to detected hazards. Sparks and embers can be extinguished in the material discharge or in the exhaust air before they reach downstream plant.

If increased spark activity points to a fire inside the mill, GreCon PROTECTOR MILL can trigger additional protective measures. These include, for example, stopping the material feed and activating direct mill extinguishing.

The coordinated protective functions help to fight fires at an early stage and limit damage to the machine and adjacent plant areas.

Fire protection for milling processes: frequently asked questions

Yes. The modular architecture of GreCon PROTECTOR MILL allows it to be integrated into different plant structures. Which detection, control and extinguishing functions are suitable depends on the milling method, the materials processed and the existing plant layout.

Overheated bearings and other machine components can become dangerous ignition sources. Suitable temperature detectors identify critical temperature developments at an early stage. This enables a timely response before a fire develops.

Sparks and embers can travel with the material flow or via extraction ducts into downstream filters, separators and other production areas, where they can cause further fires. That is why GreCon PROTECTOR MILL enables protection concepts that take both the mill and the connected plant into account.

GreCon PROTECTOR MILL detects ignition sources in the material discharge or in the exhaust air and activates the designated extinguishing measures. If there are signs of a fire inside the mill, additional responses can be triggered – for example, stopping the material feed and extinguishing directly at the mill.

Which measures are used depends on the individual protection concept.

Spark detectors monitor the material discharge and the exhaust air for sparks and hot particles. A noticeable increase in spark activity may indicate a fire developing inside the mill. GreCon PROTECTOR MILL processes these signals and can trigger graduated protective measures.

Possible causes include foreign objects in the material, damaged bearings, worn tools, material blockages and overloads. These can cause sparks or high temperatures and thus ignite the processed material.

Milling involves high mechanical loads and frictional heat. Foreign objects, damaged tools or overheated components can generate sparks and hot particles. If these meet combustible material or dust deposits, there is a risk of fire. Under certain conditions, explosive dust-air mixtures can also form.

Industrial mill in cellulose processing
JELU-CELLULOSE protects its mills with GreCon spark extinguishing technology. If sparks or hot particles are detected, the system automatically activates extinguishing and shuts down the affected plant area. This also safeguards the critical run-down phase of the mill, and production resumes after a brief inspection.
